Increased cyclone destruction potential in the Southern Indian Ocean

P. J. Vidya et al.

Summary: The study shows that the warming of the Southern Indian Ocean has doubled the Power Dissipation Index (PDI) in the region from 1999-2016 compared to 1980-1998, primarily due to an increase in cyclone intensity and duration. This increase in PDI is associated with rising sea surface temperatures and upper ocean heat content, as well as a significant slowdown in cyclone translation speeds, with ocean processes playing a major role in the recent period.

Opposite response of strong and moderate positive Indian Ocean Dipole to global warming

Wenju Cai et al.

Summary: The study reveals that under greenhouse warming, there is increased sea surface temperature variability during strong pIOD events with cool anomalies in the eastern Indian Ocean, while there is decreased variability during moderate pIOD events dominated by warm anomalies in the western region. Models predict that climate extremes, such as the 2019 events, are likely to occur more frequently under greenhouse warming.
