Citramalate synthase yields a biosynthetic pathway for isoleucine and straight- and branched-chain ester formation in ripening apple fruit

Nobuko Sugimoto et al.

Summary: The citramalate pathway, previously described in microorganisms, is shown to be functional in ripening apples, contributing to the synthesis of isoleucine and 2MB and PROP esters without feedback regulation.

Prebiotic photoredox synthesis from carbon dioxide and sulfite

Ziwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates an efficient ultraviolet photoredox chemistry between CO2 and sulfite that generates organics and sulfate. The simplicity of this carboxysulfitic chemistry and the widespread occurrence and abundance of its feedstocks suggest that it could have readily taken place on the surfaces of rocky planets, potentially driving the development of central carbon metabolism on early Earth.

High CO2 levels drive the TCA cycle backwards towards autotrophy

Lydia Steffens et al.

Summary: In Deltoproteobacterium Hippea maritima, the TCA cycle can be reversed by high CO2 partial pressures for autotrophic carbon fixation. This reversed oxidative TCA cycle could have functioned in autotrophic CO2 fixation in a primordial atmosphere rich in CO2.

A cyanosulfidic origin of the Krebs cycle

Dougal J. Ritson

Summary: The centrality of the Krebs cycle in metabolism as evidence of its antiquity has led to questions about its origin and initial function as a cycle. Research has shown that prebiotic oxidation of alpha-hydroxy carboxylates can be achieved through UV photolysis, providing precursors for amino acids, nucleotides, and phospholipids. Additionally, a related hydrogen cyanide chemistry can supply fumarate, a missing component of the Krebs cycle, and the required alpha-hydroxy carboxylates.
