Bingbao Mei et al.

Summary: Quantitatively understanding the impact of atomic-level catalyst structural changes on the reactivity of the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction is challenging. Operando high-energy resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used in this study to identify the dynamic structural transformation of active sites of a model copper(II) phthalocyanine catalyst. The approach developed is a novel and powerful technique for elucidating complex catalytic mechanisms and may contribute to the rational design of highly effective catalysts.

Cobalt porphyrin immobilized on the TiO2 nanotube electrode for CO2 electroreduction in aqueous solution

Shengshen Gu et al.

Summary: In this study, the axial coordination of drop-casting solvent to CoTPP and the porphyrin structure were found to have significant effects on the catalytic performance of the CO2 ERR reaction. Pyridine demonstrated a stronger coordination bond to CoTPP compared to DMF and THE, resulting in the highest efficiency among the tested solvents. However, introducing -COOMe substituents in CoTPP weakened the coordination bond, leading to a detrimental effect on CO2 ERR. Manipulating the coordination environment around the metal center of the immobilized catalyst is crucial in designing an efficient electrocatalytic system.

Amination strategy to boost the CO2 electroreduction current density of M-N/C single-atom catalysts to the industrial application level

Zhipeng Chen et al.

Summary: Despite the high Faraday efficiency for CO production, single-atom catalysts immobilized on nitrogen-doped carbon supports demonstrate low reaction current density. A novel amination strategy significantly increases the current density for CO production, particularly the aminated Ni single-atom catalyst achieving a remarkable CO partial current density of 450 mA cm(-2) with high FE. DFT calculations and experimental research reveal that the enhanced activity is due to the regulation of electronic structure of the aminated catalysts, offering a promising method for improving current density in industrial-level single-atom catalysts for CO2RR.
