Corner-, edge-, and facet-controlled growth of nanocrystals

Yuanwei Li et al.

Summary: A universal synthetic strategy for directing the site-specific growth of anisotropic seeds to prepare a library of designer nanostructures has been reported. This strategy leverages nucleation energy barrier profiles and the chemical potential of the growth solution to control the site-specific growth of NCs into exotic shapes and compositions. This strategy can be used to not only control where growth occurs on anisotropic seeds but also control the exposed facets of the newly grown regions.

Sequential Symmetry-Breaking Events as a Synthetic Pathway for Chiral Gold Nanostructures with Spiral Geometries

Spencer D. Golze et al.

Summary: The study introduces a light-driven solution-based synthesis approach to produce helical gold spirals from substrate-bound seeds. This growth mode relies on three separate symmetry-breaking events: seeds with planar defects, a capping agent that impedes early growth, and Coulombic repulsion when charged growth fronts collide.

Summary: The study confirms complex chiral optical fields in complex metal structures. The experiment demonstrates that by using DNA origami, placing an achiral nanosphere between a pair of distant gold nanorods arranged in a chiral fashion can achieve chiral transfer and observe enhanced circular dichroism signals.

Self-Constructed Multiple Plasmonic Hotspots on an Individual Fractal to Amplify Broadband Hot Electron Generation

Xi Wang et al.

Summary: Plasmonic nanoparticles are effective in hot-electron-assisted applications, but their narrow resonance region and limited hotspot number have limited the utilization of broadband solar energy. By designing and synthesizing silver fractals inspired by tree branches, researchers have developed structures that can create multiple plasmonic resonances and self-constructed hotspots, allowing for better utilization of hot electrons across a wider spectrum of solar radiation. The results show that fractals with acute tips and narrow gaps can support broadband resonances and numerous randomly distributed hotspots, leading to enhanced efficiency in hot electron generation.

Chiral Photomelting of DNA-Nanocrystal Assemblies Utilizing Plasmonic Photoheating

Oscar Avalos-Ovando et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that chiral light can control chiral plasmonic photomelting by using a chiral DNA-assembled nanorod pair as a model system. The nonlinear chiroptical response of the plasmonic system is attributed to the chiral photothermal effect resulting in selective melting of DNA linker strands. The proposed mechanism can be used to develop chiral photoresponsive systems controllable with circularly polarized light.
