A superconducting switch actuated by injection of high-energy electrons

M. F. Ritter et al.

Summary: Recent experiments suggest that superconductivity in metallic nanowires can be controlled by applying electric fields, with critical currents being tuned and eventually suppressed by small gate voltages. However, the mechanism behind critical current suppression remains controversial, with some proposing tunneling of high-energy electrons as a key factor. The onset of critical current suppression below 100fA gate currents presents challenges in typical experiments.

Gate Control of Superconductivity in Mesoscopic All-Metallic Devices

Sauter-Schwinger Effect in a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer Superconductor

P. Solinas et al.

Summary: Since the 1960s, a deep and surprising connection between the development of superconductivity and quantum field theory has emerged, with examples such as the Anderson-Higgs mechanism and similarities between different equations. This parallelism predicts the superconducting Sauter-Schwinger effect, where electrostatic fields can create coherent excitations from the superconducting ground-state condensate. This phenomenon sheds light on the interaction between superconductors and electric fields and suggests a method for experimental verification.

Impact of electrostatic fields in layered crystalline BCS superconductors

Luca Chirolli et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of charge redistribution in response to an applied electric field on the superconducting gap in thin crystalline metals. The study reveals that the gap becomes sensitive to the electric field when its size is an order of magnitude larger than the average level spacing in the normal state, leading to sudden rises and falls in the gap that are consistent with surface modifications of the local density of states. The effect can be mitigated by adjusting the pairing strength or introducing weak smearing in the density of states to mimic a thicker sample and a weakly disordered system.
