How to constrain warm dark matter with the Lyman-α forest

Antonella Garzilli et al.

Summary: The flux power spectrum of the high-resolution Lyman-alpha forest data shows suppression at small scales, potentially from warm dark matter or thermal effects related to the unknown reionization history of the Universe. This study explores reionization histories that leave more room for the interpretation of suppression by warm dark matter. Results indicate that thermal relics of WDM with masses below 1.9 keV would produce a suppression at larger scales than observed, demonstrating systematic uncertainty of the Lyman-alpha forest technique.

Strong Bound on Canonical Ultralight Axion Dark Matter from the Lyman-Alpha Forest

Keir K. Rogers et al.

Summary: By using the Lyman-alpha forest to search for suppressed cosmic structure growth, we present a new lower limit on the ultralight axion (ULA) dark matter mass m(a): m(a) > 2 x 10(-20) eV. This study strongly disfavors the canonical ULA with mass within the range of 10(-22) eV to 10(-21) eV.

New Evidence for Extended He II Reionization at z ≳ 3.5 from He II Lyman Alpha and Beta Transmission Spikes

Kirill Makan et al.

Summary: We observed isolated transmission spikes in He ii Ly alpha and Ly beta in two bright far-UV He ii-transparent quasars, indicating fully ionized regions in the intergalactic medium at z greater than or similar to 3.5. Our observations suggest that He ii reionization had progressed substantially at these redshifts.

Effects of Photoionization and Photoheating on Lyα Forest Properties from Cholla Cosmological Simulations

Bruno Villasenor et al.

Summary: The study investigates the density and temperature properties of the intergalactic medium (IGM) using the CHIPS suite, revealing the impact of heating and ionization history during cosmic structure formation. The models show relative agreement with observations at different redshifts and scales, but discrepancies exist in certain aspects. Additionally, model performance can be improved by adjusting the photoheating rate.

An emulator for the Lyman-α forest in beyond-ΛCDM cosmologies

Christian Pedersen et al.

Summary: Interpreting observations of the Lyman-alpha forest flux power spectrum requires interpolation between simulations. A Gaussian process emulator has been presented to model the 1D flux power spectrum, enabling predictions in extended cosmological models without the need for bespoke emulators. This approach is suitable for cosmologies where the linear matter power spectrum is accurately described by an amplitude and slope across a specific epoch, and in the regime probed by eBOSS/DESI data.

A consistent and robust measurement of the thermal state of the IGM at 2 ≤ z ≤ 4 from α large sample of Lya forest spectra: evidence for late and rapid He II reionization

Prakash Gaikwad et al.

Summary: This study characterizes the thermal state of the intergalactic medium at redshifts between 2 and 4 using high-resolution Lyα forest spectra. The measurements show a peak in temperature at mean density and a minimum slope in the temperature-density relation expected from He II reionization. Different flux statistics agree well and suggest a rapid thermal evolution of the IGM with peak temperature occurring around redshift z≈3. Different UV-background models predict varying thermal states, with some models aligning well with the observed rapid thermal evolution.

Studying the Lyman α optical depth fluctuations at z ∼ 5.5 using fast semi-numerical methods

T. Roy Choudhury et al.

Summary: A computationally efficient method is proposed in this study to simulate Lyman alpha absorption optical depth in the presence of neutral hydrogen "islands" leftover from reionization at redshifts between 5 and 6. By analyzing large-scale fluctuations in optical depth, it is confirmed at greater than or similar to 2 sigma confidence that reionization is not complete before around 5.6, with a possibility of completion as late as around 5.2.
