Gaia Early Data Release 3 Summary of the contents and survey properties

A. G. A. Brown et al.

Summary: Gaia EDR3 is the early installment of the third data release from the Gaia project, providing astrometry and photometry for 1.8 billion sources brighter than magnitude 21, along with radial velocities from Gaia DR2. The data processing precision and homogeneity have significantly improved compared to the previous version, with additional information on celestial bodies and an updated celestial reference frame.

Kinematics of Antlia 2 and Crater 2 from the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey (S 5)

Alexander P. Ji et al.

Summary: New spectroscopic observations of Antlia 2 and Crater 2, part of the Southern Stellar Stream Spectroscopic Survey, reveal an increase in confirmed member stars and velocity gradients consistent with tidal disruption simulations. A revised metallicity estimation for Antlia 2 suggests ongoing substantial stellar mass loss despite previous overestimation. Current dynamical models, requiring Antlia 2 to have lost over 90% of its stars, are in tension with the updated metallicity. Overall, the kinematic measurements support a tidal disruption scenario for the origin of these dwarf spheroidal galaxies.

Gaia EDR3 Proper Motions of Milky Way Dwarfs. II Velocities, Total Energy, and Angular Momentum

Francois Hammer et al.

Summary: The precise Gaia EDR3 proper motions have provided robust estimates of velocities, angular momentum, and total energy for 40 Milky Way dwarfs. These dwarfs do not behave like long-lived satellites of the Milky Way due to their excessively large velocities, angular momenta, and total energies. Comparing them to other Milky Way halo populations, many dwarfs are found to have passed near the center of the galaxy more recently than the Sagittarius dwarf passage, around 2 billion years ago. The study also indicates that dwarf radial velocities contribute too little to their kinetic energy, suggesting the presence of another mechanism at work.

The mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc using halo stars

Alis J. Deason et al.

Summary: Using distribution function analysis, the study estimated the mass of the Milky Way within 100 kpc. Systematic effects such as the dynamical influence of the Large Magellanic Cloud and unrelaxed substructure were carefully considered. The results showed that the Milky Way's mass estimate is approximately 6.07 x 10^11 M(circle dot) after corrections and adjustments to account for various factors.

Summary: This study presents a new spectroscopic analysis of the faint Milky Way satellite Sagittarius II, confirming it as an old and metal-poor globular cluster of the Milky Way. The low velocity dispersion and metallicity properties were investigated using additional member stars observed, providing insights into the dynamics of the system.

Narrowing the Mass Range of Fuzzy Dark Matter with Ultrafaint Dwarfs

Kohei Hayashi et al.

Summary: Research has found that most of the ultrafaint dwarf galaxies prefer FDM particle masses heavier than 10(-21) eV, with Segue 1 providing the strongest constraint. Additionally, the constraints obtained in this study are compatible with various other independent cosmological and astrophysical bounds found in the literature, but are not compatible with the bounds from luminous dwarf galaxies.

A Deeper Look at DES Dwarf Galaxy Candidates: Grus I and Indus II

Sarah A. Cantu et al.

Summary: This study presents deep g- and r-band Magellan/Megacam photometry of two dwarf galaxy candidates, Grus I and Indus II. Grus I is found to be an old, metal-poor dwarf galaxy, with updated distance and structural parameters. However, Indus II is likely a false positive detection due to chance alignment of stars along the line of sight.

Born in a Pair (?): Pisces II and Pegasus III*

Alessia Garofalo et al.

Summary: The authors studied variable stars in the Milky Way ultra-faint dwarf satellites Pisces II and Pegasus III using time-series photometry data collected with the Large Binocular Telescope. They identified RRab stars, SX Phoenicis stars, and stars with uncertain classifications in both galaxies. The study suggests that these galaxies may contain a dominant old stellar population with metallicity variations, as supported by color-magnitude diagrams and spectroscopic analysis.

Accurate distances to Galactic globular clusters through a combination of Gaia EDR3, HST, and literature data

H. Baumgardt et al.

Summary: Accurate distances to Galactic globular clusters are derived by combining data from Gaia EDR3, HST, and literature. Different methods show good agreement in average distances at a level of about 2%, with distances to 162 clusters determined and about 20 with an accuracy of 1% or better. The implications of these distances for the local Hubble constant are discussed.

The mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc using halo stars

Alis J. Deason et al.

Summary: Using a distribution function analysis, we estimated the mass of the Milky Way out to 100 kpc by studying a large sample of halo stars. We considered systematic effects like the dynamical influence of the Large Magellanic Cloud and unrelaxed substructure. After accounting for these factors, we found the mass within 100 kpc to be approximately 6.07 x 10^11 M, with variations in total mass estimates based on different scenarios and corrections for reflex motion induced by the LMC.
