Flavonoids from Artemisia rupestris and their synergistic antibacterial effects on drug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus

Jiang-Er Lan et al.

Summary: This study identified five flavonoids from the traditional Chinese herb Artemisia rupestris L., which showed synergistic antibacterial effects against multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Three of the compounds exhibited synergy when combined with norfloxacin against fluoroquinolone-resistant strains, and further investigations were conducted to explore the mechanisms of the synergistic effects.

Bacterial efflux inhibitors are widely distributed in land plants

Adam R. Brown et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that efflux pump inhibitors against Staphylococcus aureus are common in land plants and can increase the potency of antimicrobial compounds. The most active extracts were from Osmunda claytoniana L. and Pinus strobes L., showing IC50 values for efflux inhibition of 19 ppm. Evaluation of efflux pump inhibition may be valuable when studying natural product efficacy.

Screening of Natural Compounds as P-Glycoprotein Inhibitors against Multidrug Resistance

Sergio M. Marques et al.

Summary: In this study, a computational approach was used to construct the full-length three-dimensional structure of human P-gp and refine it with molecular dynamics. Through docking experiments, certain natural flavonoids were identified as effective P-gp inhibitors, increasing the accumulation of doxorubicin in cancer cells and enhancing its antiproliferative activity.

Summary: This study found that certain flavonoids can effectively reverse multidrug resistance mediated by P-glycoprotein (P-gp) by inhibiting its activity, with specific structural groups and substitutions playing a crucial role in their inhibitory effects. Additionally, flavonoids can impact P-gp ATPase activity and expression levels, thereby influencing its drug transport activity.
