Dietary ferulic acid and vanillic acid on inflammation, gut barrier function and growth performance in lipopolysaccharide-challenged piglets

Ruizhi Hu et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that both vanillic acid (VA) and ferulic acid (FA) can alleviate inflammation and oxidative stress, with VA having a significant positive effect on the growth performance of LPS-challenged piglets potentially through modulating gut microbiota.

Luteolin mitigates tamoxifen-associated fatty liver and cognitive impairment in rats by modulating beta-catenin

Rana K. El-Asfar et al.

Summary: Co-treatment with luteolin significantly alleviated behavioral defects in rats with TAM-induced cognitive impairment, reversed neurodegeneration in the cortex and hippocampal regions, attenuated hepatic steatosis, decreased levels of serum aminotransferases, and improved liver function markers. As an anti-inflammatory agent, luteolin also decreased hepatic inflammatory markers and increased hepatic 13-catenin levels in TAM-induced fatty liver.

Impact of household cooking techniques on colour, antioxidant and sensory properties of African pumpkin and pumpkin leaves

Petunia Mashiane et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of household cooking techniques on color properties, antioxidants, and sensory quality of African pumpkin and pumpkin leaves. Steaming was found to be the most effective method for maintaining color, antioxidants, and sensory qualities. Stir-frying was preferred for taste, while steaming was the second choice.

Domestic cooking methods affect the stability and bioaccessibility of dark purple eggplant (Solanum melongena) phenolic compounds

Serena Martini et al.

Summary: The study found that baking, grilling, and frying have different effects on the release of phenolic compounds in dark purple eggplants, with fried eggplants having the highest content of phenolic compounds after digestion. Therefore, careful design of the cooking method may be crucial in modulating the release of specific phenolic compounds.

Phenolic compounds and biological rhythms: Who takes the lead?

Javier Avila-Roman et al.

Summary: Phenolic compounds, despite their low bioavailability, have shown beneficial effects against chronic diseases. The interaction between these compounds and biological rhythms may impact their bioactivities, with implications for the food industry. Through extensive transformation, including metabolization in the colon by gut microbiota, phenolic compounds may promote homeostasis and interact with the biological clock system. This aligns with the xenohormesis hypothesis, suggesting that plant chemicals can help animals adapt to changing environmental conditions.
