Hepatoprotective, cytotoxic, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of Dioon spinulosum leaves Dyer Ex Eichler and its isolated secondary metabolites

Walaa A. Negm et al.

Summary: This study focused on the biological activities and phytochemical investigation of Dioon spinulosum for the first time due to the lack of adequate research. The plant showed strong protective activity against DNA damage, potent activity against VERO cell line, antimicrobial, and hepatoprotective activities. Phytochemical investigation resulted in the isolation of two new flavonoids and fifteen known compounds, some of which showed very strong cytotoxic and protective activity against DNA damage.

Outer membrane permeabilization by the membrane attack complex sensitizes Gram-negative bacteria to antimicrobial proteins in serum and phagocytes

Dani A. C. Heesterbeek et al.

Summary: This study identified how different components of the human immune system work together to degrade the complex cell envelope of Gram-negative bacteria. The complement-dependent Membrane Attack Complex (MAC) formation permeabilizes the outer membrane of bacteria, allowing antimicrobial proteins to reach their targets. This knowledge may lead to the development of new antimicrobial strategies to combat infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria.

An investigation of the impact of triclosan adaptation on Proteus mirabilis clinical isolates from an Egyptian university hospital

Engy Elekhnawy et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of exposure of Proteus mirabilis to sublethal concentrations of Triclosan, finding that most adapted isolates exhibited increased antibiotic resistance, lower membrane integrity, and changes in membrane characteristics and efflux activity. These results suggest that the extensive usage of Triclosan at sublethal concentrations could contribute to the emergence of antibiotic resistance in P. mirabilis clinical isolates.

Elucidation of Phytochemical Content of Cupressus macrocarpa Leaves: In Vitro and In Vivo Antibacterial Effect against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Clinical Isolates

Nashwah G. M. Attallah et al.

Summary: The study investigated the antimicrobial potential of Cupressus macrocarpa leaves against MRSA and found that its extracts demonstrated strong inhibitory effects on the bacteria, reducing both growth and efflux activity significantly. The phytochemical profiling of the leaves revealed a large number of compounds, showing promising antimicrobial properties against MRSA both in vitro and in vivo.
