VOC emission inventory of architectural coatings and adhesives for new buildings in China based on investigated and measured data

Xiaoming Liang et al.

Summary: Architectural decoration is a significant source of VOC emissions in China, leading to indoor air pollution. The VOC emission inventory for architectural coatings and adhesives in new buildings in China in 2017 revealed that floor coatings and solvent-based adhesives were the major contributors. It is recommended that China strengthens market access and supervision of architectural materials, and gradually eliminates solvent-based coatings and adhesives in the future.

Comprehensive characterization and health assessment of occupational exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Xi'an, a major city of northwestern China

Hongmei Xu et al.

Summary: The study in Xi'an, China analyzed personal exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in five different occupational groups. Furniture store employees had the highest exposure concentration due to off-gassing from new furniture and cleaning reagents. Aromatic species were dominant in other occupational groups, while furniture store employees had the highest exposure to carbonyls. The study highlighted the potential indoor or in-vehicle sources of VOCs and emphasized the health risks associated with exposure to certain VOCs, such as vinyl chloride and benzene.

Distributions and temporal changes of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene concentrations in newly decorated rooms in southeastern China, and the health risks posed

Zhicheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Air samples were collected from 227 newly decorated rooms in southeastern China between November 2014 and July 2017 to determine the BTEX concentrations. The study found that the mean BTEX concentrations were above Chinese regulatory standards, and they correlated positively with temperature and humidity but negatively with air pressure, with the highest concentrations in summer. Conference rooms and residences had higher BTEX concentrations compared to classrooms and halls, with the highest concentrations during painting and carpentry. Most rooms exceeded the hazard quotient and cancer risk limits, with benzene and xylene being the main contributors.

Very volatile organic compounds (VVOC) as emissions from wooden materials and in indoor air of new prefabricated wooden houses

Alexandra Schieweck

Summary: This study found that even wooden materials can emit VVOCs, but they do not play a significant role in indoor air of new prefabricated wooden houses. Substances identified as potential sources include insulation materials, leading to indoor air quality issues in some houses. Therefore, the appropriate selection and application of construction materials are crucial for achieving acceptable indoor air quality.

Estimates of emission strengths of 43 VOCs in wintertime residential indoor environments, Beijing

Lihui Huang et al.

Summary: A study conducted in 8 urban residences in Beijing measured the indoor and outdoor concentrations of 43 VOCs, identifying 36 species with significant indoor sources. A model was developed to estimate the indoor emission strengths of these VOCs, ranking D-limonene, alpha-pinene, and styrene as the top contributors. Factors such as air exchange rate, indoor temperature, and humidity were found to have significant impacts on VOC emission strengths.

Meiping Gao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from adhesives used in indoor decoration, showing that the VOC emissions were mainly contributed by beautiful sealant, wall and ground solidify, sealant glue, and all-purpose adhesive, with Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Sichuan, and Guangdong being the top five provinces for VOC emissions.

Source profiles and emission factors of VOCs from solvent-based architectural coatings and their contributions to ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation in China

Meiping Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contribution of solvent-based architectural coatings to atmospheric pollution in China, including VOC emissions and the formation of ozone and SOA. Results showed that strategies for eliminating ozone and SOA should prioritize aromatic organic groups and highly reactive VOC species.

Trace volatile compounds in the air of domestic waste landfill site: Identification, olfactory effect and cancer risk

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: By investigating surface emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors from a rural domestic waste landfill site in southwest China, it was found that high emissions were located in the air surrounding the leachate storage pool and dumping area. The dominant species of VOCs included hexaldehyde, m-xylene, propylene oxide, acetophenone, and 2-butanone, while the main carcinogens were benzene, trichlorethylene, and 1,3-butadiene.
