Soybean Yellow Stripe-like 7 is a symbiosome membrane peptide transporter important for nitrogen fixation

Aleksandr Gavrin et al.

Summary: The study identified GmYSL7 in soybean nodules as a transporter of oligopeptides, unlike most YSL family members that transport metals complexed with phytosiderophores. Silencing GmYSL7 reduces nitrogenase activity and blocks infected cell development, indicating the importance of its substrate for proper nodule development. RNAseq analysis of silenced nodules showed a defense response against rhizobia as well as alterations in genes related to amino acid export and metal homeostasis. These changes suggest that the peptides transported by GmYSL7 play a role in monitoring bacteroid function and regulating nodule metabolism and transport processes. Further research is needed to clarify the specific physiological substrate of GmYSL7.
