Suicidal ideation and suicide attempts: associations with sleep duration, insomnia, and inflammation

Michael R. Dolsen et al.

Summary: This study showed that both short and long sleep duration, insomnia symptoms, and IL-6 are associated with suicide risk indicators, with the association between long sleep duration and suicidal ideation possibly mediated by IL-6.

The Role of Oxidant-Antioxidant Status in Suicide Behavior in Kurdish Ethnicity

Mahin Oshnokhah et al.

Summary: The levels of the antioxidant enzyme Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) were significantly lower in suicide attempters compared to controls, while the level of Nitric Oxide (NO) was significantly higher. Interestingly, Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly lower in suicide attempters compared to controls. This suggests that oxidative stress without MDA elevation may be a biochemical hallmark of suicide behavior.

Peripheral levels of C-reactive protein, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1β across the mood spectrum in bipolar disorder: A meta-analysis of mean differences and variability

Marco Solmi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare inflammatory mediators in bipolar disorder (BD) with healthy controls, finding that CRP and TNF-alpha may be state markers as they were only elevated during mood episodes, while IL-6 appeared to be a trait marker for BD. The variability of specific inflammatory mediators in specific disease active states suggests that some BD subjects may exhibit elevated inflammation during manic or depressive episodes.

Predictive inflammatory biomarkers for change in suicidal ideation in major depressive disorder and panic disorder: A 12-week follow-up study

Kwan Woo Choi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between serum inflammatory cytokine levels and suicidality in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and panic disorder (PD). Results suggest that MDD and PD patients may have significantly higher levels of inflammatory markers compared to healthy controls. Furthermore, higher baseline levels of TNF-alpha in MDD patients were found to be a significant predictor of changes in suicide ideation intensity.

Summary: This study utilized machine learning techniques to construct a model incorporating risk/resilience, adverse outcome pathways, staging, and phenome of mood disorders. By analyzing factors influencing these features, two distinct patient clusters were identified, and a transdiagnostic model of mood disorders was successfully created.

First Episode Psychosis and Schizophrenia Are Systemic Neuro-Immune Disorders Triggered by a Biotic Stimulus in Individuals with Reduced Immune Regulation and Neuroprotection

Michael Maes et al.

Summary: Schizophrenia is characterized by activation of immune-inflammatory response, compensatory immune-regulatory systems, and lowered neuroprotection. Studies on antipsychotic-naive first episode psychosis and schizophrenia patients are important in understanding the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. The research focused on protein-protein interaction networks, highlighting associations with peripheral immune response, neuroinflammation, and pathways related to immune molecules, neurotrophins, and cell junction organization.

Summary: Suicide is a major global cause of death. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with suicidality in patients with mental disorders. Those with high suicidal ideation or suicide attempts had higher CRP levels compared to non-suicidal individuals.
