Neuroanatomical abnormalities in first-episode psychosis across independent samples: a multi-centre mega-analysis

Sandra Vieira et al.

Summary: This study identified a consistent pattern of neuroanatomical abnormalities in fronto-temporal, insular and occipital regions in five independent samples of individuals with first-episode psychosis. The extent of these alterations was found to be dependent on the severity of symptoms and duration of illness, providing evidence for reliable neuroanatomical changes in first-episode psychosis.

Anterior vs Posterior Hippocampal Subfields in an Extended Psychosis Phenotype of Multidimensional Schizotypy in a Nonclinical Sample

Lili Sahakyan et al.

Summary: Numerous studies have shown the involvement of the hippocampus in schizophrenia, with reductions in volume being a common abnormality. Recent findings suggest reductions in anterior hippocampal volume in early stages of schizophrenia. This study examined the associations of schizotypy dimensions with hippocampal subfield volumes, finding differential effects across various dimensions of the schizotypy risk phenotype, particularly related to negative and disorganized symptoms. These findings contribute to a dimensional neurobiological model of schizophrenia risk.

Virtual Histology of Cortical Thickness and Shared Neurobiology in 6 Psychiatric Disorders

Yash Patel et al.

Summary: The study identified shared neurobiological processes associated with differences in cortical thickness among multiple psychiatric disorders, suggesting a common role of prenatal development and postnatal functioning of the cerebral cortex. The analysis of data from 145 cohorts revealed that greater expression of genes specific to pyramidal cells was associated with greater group differences in cortical thickness across all 6 disorders.

Association of Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging Measures With Psychosis Onset in Individuals at Clinical High Risk for Developing Psychosis An ENIGMA Working Group Mega-analysis

Maria Jalbrzikowski et al.

Summary: This study investigates baseline structural neuroimaging differences between individuals at clinical high risk and healthy controls, as well as differences between those who later developed a psychotic disorder and those who did not. The findings suggest that lower cortical thickness in individuals at CHR is associated with later psychosis conversion, and certain regions with lower cortical thickness also show abnormal associations with age.

Comparing spatial null models for brain maps

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of ten different null frameworks in statistical analysis of neuroimaging data. Results showed that null models that preserved spatial autocorrelation produced more realistic, conservative statistical estimates, but still had elevated false positive rates and variable performance across different analyses.
