Closing the gap: unmet needs of individuals with impulsive aggressive behavior observed in children and adolescents

Adelaide S. Robb et al.

Summary: Impulsive aggressive (IA) behavior is a reactive, eruptive, sudden, and unplanned behavior that significantly impacts the development of children and adolescents. The lack of an assessment tool specifically designed for IA behaviors and a treatment indicated for IA symptomatology are major obstacles in identifying, monitoring, and treating IA behavior across clinical populations. Emerging solutions may improve clinical outcomes in patients with IA.

Reward Processing in Children With Disruptive Behavior Disorders and Callous-Unemotional Traits in the ABCD Study

Samuel W. Hawes et al.

Summary: The study investigated neural sensitivity to reward anticipation and receipt among youths with disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs), with and without callous-unemotional traits. The results showed differences in brain activation patterns during reward anticipation and receipt between typically developing youths and those with DBDs, with DBD-only group exhibiting reduced activity in certain brain regions and the DBD+CU group showing increased activation compared to typically developing youths.

Aggression subtypes relate to distinct resting state functional connectivity in children and adolescents with disruptive behavior

Julia E. Werhahn et al.

Summary: This study revealed subtype-specific patterns of aggression involving emotion, empathy, morality, and cognitive control, with proactive aggression associated with increased left amygdala-precuneus coupling and reactive aggression related to hyper-connectivities of various brain regions. Callous-unemotional traits were linked to distinct hyper-connectivities to frontal, parietal, and cingulate areas, indicating their role in aggressive behavior.

Developing functional network connectivity of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex mediates externalizing psychopathology in adolescents with child neglect

Sarita Silveira et al.

Summary: Childhood adversity is associated with increased risk for externalizing/internalizing behaviors, potentially mediated by the impact on functional connectivity within EF networks. Specifically, neglect in childhood is negatively associated with connectivity of the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex within the cingulo-opercular network, mediating the association with externalizing behaviors.
