New approaches to species delimitation and population structure of anthozoans: Two case studies of octocorals using ultraconserved elements and exons

Katie L. Erickson et al.

Summary: As coral populations decline worldwide, documenting distribution, diversity, and conservation status becomes imperative. Target enrichment of UCEs and exons is proven to be effective for delimiting species boundaries and population structure in corals. These case studies demonstrate the utility of this method for addressing evolutionary and taxonomic questions in corals across deep to shallow timescales.

Simulated climate change scenarios impact the reproduction and early life stages of a soft coral

Ronen Liberman et al.

Summary: Climate change affects the sexual reproduction and photosynthetic capacity of Red Sea coral, leading to changes in reproductive timing and synchronicity. Survival and metamorphosis rates of offspring reared under simulated conditions are significantly reduced, highlighting potential long-term impacts on the coral population.

Integrative systematics of the scleractinian coral genera Caulastraea, Erythrastrea and Oulophyllia

Roberto Arrigoni et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, modern systematics incorporating molecular and morphological data has significantly advanced our understanding of coral evolutionary relationships and resulted in a comprehensive revision of the taxonomy of the order Scleractinia. By studying 89 specimens from various genera across the Indo-Pacific realm, new phylogenetic relationships within the Merulinidae family were revealed through molecular and morphological analyses. This integrated approach highlights the importance of a rigorous phylogenetic framework for an objective classification that accurately reflects the evolutionary history of scleractinian corals.

An Indo-Pacific coral spawning database

Andrew H. Baird et al.

Summary: The discovery of multi-species synchronous spawning on the Great Barrier Reef in the 1980s led to efforts to document spawning times globally. The Coral Spawning Database (CSD) compiles data from over 100 sites in the Indo-Pacific region to provide open access for studying coral reproductive biology. The CSD aims to accelerate understanding of coral reproduction and to establish a baseline for evaluating future changes in reproductive patterns.
