The Origin of the Legumes is a Complex Paleopolyploid Phylogenomic Tangle Closely Associated with the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) Mass Extinction Event

Erik J. M. Koenen et al.

Summary: The study reveals that legumes appeared in the late Cretaceous or early Paleogene, underwent rapid diversification after the mass extinction event, and were involved in multiple whole genome duplication events. The early evolution of legumes was complex, with several polyploidy events coinciding with rapid diversification.

Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Widespread Nuclear and Plastid-Nuclear Discordance in the Flowering Plant Genus Polemonium (Polemoniaceae) Suggests Widespread Historical Gene Flow Despite Limited Nuclear Signal

Jeffrey P. Rose et al.

Summary: Research utilizing various methods to analyze phylogenomic data from the Polemonium genus found widespread discordance among nuclear loci, which can be explained by both incomplete lineage sorting and reticulate evolution. The histories of organellar genomes showed strong discordance with the inferred species tree from the nuclear genome, with only one case of discordance attributed to detected introgression events.

Chloroplast phylogenomics and character evolution of eastern Asian Astragalus (Leguminosae): Tackling the phylogenetic structure of the largest genus of flowering plants in Asia

Chun Su et al.

Summary: This study conducted extensive sampling and phylogenetic analysis of Astragalus and its close relatives, revealing Astragalus to be monophyletic and can be divided into ten clades that differ significantly from previous classifications. The ancestral origin of Astragalus was estimated to be in the mid Miocene, with multiple evolutionary events of trichome morphology and habit development. The study also proposed that the uplifts of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau may have accelerated the rapid speciation of Astragalus, especially within the xerophilous groups.
