Chromosome-level genome assembly of Lethenteron reissneri provides insights into lamprey evolution

Ting Zhu et al.

Summary: This study assembled a chromosome-level draft genome of the reissner lamprey, revealing unique genetic features related to the adaptive evolution of lampreys. The genome of the reissner lamprey showed higher completeness and contiguity compared to other lamprey species, suggesting a burst of transposable element activity and whole genome duplication before divergence. Expansion of Lip gene copy numbers in lamprey lineages and identification of neural-related genes with copy number expansions in jawed vertebrates highlight key roles for these genes in lamprey evolution and adaptation.
