Does variation in glucocorticoid concentrations predict fitness? A phylogenetic meta-analysis

Laura A. Schoenle et al.

Summary: GCs are negatively correlated with reproductive success and the relationship between GCs and survival depends on life history strategy. In longer-lived populations and species, GCs are more strongly negatively associated with survival. Experimental increases in GCs reduce both survival and reproductive success, but more data is needed to confirm this conclusion. Incorporating life history context may be particularly important for understanding GC-survival relationships.

Analysis of telomere length variation and Shelterin complex subunit gene expression changes in ethanol-exposed human embryonic stem cells

Muhammad Moazzam et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of ethanol on telomere length and Shelterin complex subunit gene expression in human embryonic stem cells. The findings suggest that TL variation and expression changes of certain Shelterin subunit genes are primarily influenced by the length of ethanol exposure, while others are affected by ethanol concentration, exposure time, and their interaction. After a 7-day ethanol exposure, TL and expression of five genes decreased, but recovered after a 14-day exposure, indicating adaptation of hESCs to ethanol-induced stress.

A putative telomerase activator has tissue-specific effects on telomere length in a developing songbird

Sarah E. Wolf et al.

Summary: The experimental manipulation of telomere dynamics in wild tree swallows revealed that the telomerase activator TA-65 can lengthen telomeres in blood and accelerate feather growth in chicks. However, TA-65 did not affect telomere length in the brain or spleen, and resulted in shorter telomeres in the liver and adrenals. This study advances our understanding of early-life telomere dynamics and their potential impact on future health and lifespan variations.
