Actin bundle architecture and mechanics regulate myosin II force generation

Kimberly L. Weirich et al.

Summary: The microstructures of actin assemblies regulate myosin II dynamics and force generation, with bundles formed by rigid cross-linkers supporting slow, bidirectional motion with stalls, while bundles formed by compliant, large cross-linkers support fast, bidirectional motion with no stalls. Simulations show that trap duration is related to force magnitude and increased velocity is due to bundle compliance and filament spacing. Architecture and mechanics play a key role in regulating forces in biological materials.
