A fumarole in a one-pot: synthesis, crystal structure and properties of Zn- and Mg-analogs of itelmenite and a synthetic analog of glikinite

Diana O. Nekrasova et al.

Summary: The abundant anhydrous sulfate minerals in the active fumaroles of the Tolbachik volcano scoria cones were studied, resulting in the synthesis of synthetic analogs of itelmenite and glikinite minerals, showing slight deviations from their ideal stoichiometry. Analysis of Na+-ion diffusion allowed for possible scenarios of mineral formation processes to be deduced.

Summary: Two novel compounds, K2Cu3(SO4)(4) and KNaCu(SO4)(2), were synthesized with unique frameworks and low ion migration barriers. Analysis of electron density distribution and bond-valence energy landscapes were used to predict ion migration pathways and barriers.

Evolution of fumarolic anhydrous copper sulfate minerals during successive hydration/dehydration

Oleg Siidra et al.

Summary: The hydration and dehydration processes of anhydrous minerals from Tolbachik volcano's fumaroles were studied, revealing the complex reactions and structural changes of various minerals. The presence of oxygen-centred tetrahedra in anhydrous copper sulfate minerals from fumarolic origin was noted, which is absent in hydrated minerals or synthetic compounds. Hydration of minerals with oxygen anions proceeded to form a series of hydroxysalts, while hydration of itelmenite resulted in simpler hydrates due to its complex 'initial' structure without additional oxygen atoms.

K(Na,K)Na2[Cu2(SO4)4]: a new highly porous anhydrous sulfate and evaluation of possible ion migration pathways

Oleg Siidra et al.

Summary: Alkali copper sulfates have formed a rapidly growing family of inorganics. The crystal structure of the novel Na-K-Cu anhydrous sulfate, K(Na,K)Na-2[Cu-2(SO4)(4)], contains two symmetry-independent Cu sites with unique coordination environments, indicating potential for Na+ mobility. The correlation between crystallographic characteristics and bond valence energies suggests that K(Na,K)Na-2[Cu-2(SO4)(4)] could serve as a promising candidate for novel Na-ion conductors.

Ilya V. Kornyakov et al.

Summary: Averievite-type compounds have different structure types with a one-dimensional electroneutral framework composed of Cu2+ ions and oxygen ions, possessing channels occupied by monovalent metal cations M+ and halide ions X-. The formation of a particular structure type is controlled by the interplay of chemical composition and temperature.
