The environmental importance of iron speciation in soils: evaluation of classic methodologies

Gabriele Veronica de Mello Gabriel et al.

Summary: Iron is an essential mineral abundant in soils as ferrous and ferric ions. The determination of ferrous iron is crucial for agricultural and redox processes, but methodologies using colorimetric reagents to determine it are divergent. Two colorimetric reagents were compared in this study to determine total iron concentration in soil, showcasing the importance of improving widely used methodologies for studying iron speciation.

Development of highly sensitive electrochemical sensor using new graphite/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene conductive composite and 3D printing-based alternative fabrication protocol

Jacqueline Marques Petroni et al.

Summary: A novel electrically conductive thermoplastic material G/ABS composed of graphite/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene was reported for the first time, showing improved performance in 3D printing-based electrochemical sensors. The G/ABS electrodes demonstrated lower charge transfer resistance, higher electroactive area, and higher peak currents compared to carbon black/polylactic acid electrodes. The G/ABS sensor exhibited satisfactory repeatability, reproducibility, and stability, making it a promising material for electroanalytical applications.

Simultaneous and sensitive detection of multiple small biological molecules by microfluidic paper-based analytical device integrated with zinc oxide nanorods

Li-Xia Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, ZnO nanorods were hydrothermally grown on Whatman filter paper to fabricate a microfluidic paper-based device for simultaneous detection of glucose and uric acid. The presence of ZnO NRs promoted enzyme immobilization and overcame the coffee ring effect through uniform distribution and specialized design. Two color indicators provided complementary results for quantifying target analytes visually.
