Chitosan-based nanoparticles against bacterial infections

Somaye Rashki et al.

Summary: Chitosan nanomaterials have gained attention in biomedicine for their high levels of biodegradability and biocompatibility, along with antimicrobial effects. Functional modification with other natural compounds, metallic antimicrobial particles, and antibiotics can enhance the efficiency of chitosan in wound dressing with antimicrobial activity. The antibacterial effect of chitosan is mainly associated with the leakage of intracellular content due to malfunction and altered permeability of the negatively charged cell membrane, on which chitosan is adsorbed. Additionally, chitosan nanoparticles possess favorable features of nanoparticles and their chitosan base, thereby exhibiting strengthened antibacterial potential. Polycations in chitosan nanoparticles target negatively charged bacterial membranes, resulting in a stronger effect on bacterial cells compared to pure chitosan.

Development of prediction models for adsorption properties of chitin and chitosan for micropollutants

Chul-Woong Cho et al.

Summary: The study found that the adsorption affinities of chitin and chitosan for micropollutants depend on the chemical structures and exhibit similar properties. Experimental and calculated descriptors can predict their adsorption properties accurately, with impurities having a negligible effect on adsorption. The main driving forces of chitin and chitosan were identified as the H-bonding donor moment and ionic electrostatic attraction.

The occurrence and sources of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in agricultural soils across China with an emphasis on unintentionally produced PCBs

Shuduan Mao et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that unintentionally produced PCBs are major contributors to atmospheric PCBs and are controlling PCB burdens in agricultural soils across China. The dominant contributors to PCBs in Chinese agricultural soils are the legacy of historically produced and used commercial PCB mixtures, especially high-chlorinated congeners. Unintentional sources, such as pigment/paint, combustion-related sources, and polymer sealants, account for a significant portion of total PCBs in Chinese soils.

Ultrasound assisted synthesis of Pd NPs decorated chitosan-starch functionalized Fe3O4 nanocomposite catalyst towards Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and reduction of 4-nitrophenol

Hojat Veisi et al.

Summary: Recent advancements in nanomagnetic biocomposites as sustainable green catalysts have led to the design and synthesis of a novel Pd NP adorned chitosan-starch dual biopolymer encapsulated core-shell type magnetic nanocomposite. This material showed excellent catalytic efficiency in Suzuki-Miyaura coupling and catalytic reduction processes, with sonication playing a key role in enhancing catalytic performance. Additionally, the material's super-paramagnetism allowed for easy magnetic isolation and reuse in multiple cycles without significant leaching or loss in reactivity.

Chitosan modifications for adsorption of pollutants-A review

Ismaila Olalekan Saheed et al.

Summary: Modification of chitosan through methods such as grafting and cross-linking is a promising approach for removing organic and inorganic pollutants from aqueous medium. The performance of modified chitosan for adsorption of pollutants depends largely on the modification method adopted, materials used, and adsorption experimental conditions. Cross-linking is commonly used for improving the stability of chitosan, although it may decrease adsorption capacity, but recent works have shown enhancement through grafting or incorporation of solid adsorbents before cross-linking.
