Spread of OXA-48 and NDM-1-Producing Klebsiella pneumoniae ST48 and ST101 in Chicken Meat in Western Algeria

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae in chicken meat in Western Algeria in 2017. It found a certain proportion of carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in the samples, and further characterized these strains with regard to antibiotic resistance, beta-lactamase content, plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance, sulfonamide resistance genes, clonality, and virulence traits. The study concluded that food serves as a reservoir of the carbapenemases encoding genes.

Summary: The study identified carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates from the urology department of Annaba hospital in Algeria. The isolates showed resistance to most beta-lactam antibiotics and carried bla(KPC-2) and bla(OXA-48) genes, with different sequence types (STs) identified among the strains. The carbapenem resistance genes were found to be likely borne by plasmids.
