Peptide signaling without feedback in signal production operates as a true quorum sensing communication system in Bacillus subtilis

Iztok Dogsa et al.

Summary: Bacterial quorum sensing relies on signal molecules that increase with cell density, and a positive feedback loop of signal molecules can lead to a sharp transition in gene expression level. However, not all communication systems have this loop. Through experiments and mathematical modeling, it is found that the ComX peptide encodes information about cell density, specific cell growth rate, and oxygen concentration, ensuring power-law increase in signal molecule production and a sharp transition in gene expression level without the typical feedback loop.

Bacillus subtilis High Cell Density Fermentation Using a Sporulation-Deficient Strain for the Production of Surfactin

Peter Klausmann et al.

Summary: Bacillus subtilis 3NA, a strain capable of high cell densities, utilized its surfactin-producing variant JABs32 in fed-batch processes to achieve significantly increased surfactin titers. Optimization of culture conditions showed a promising potential for enhanced surfactin production in high cell density fermentation.
