Infectious complications from injection drug use are common reasons for seeking medical attention, and identifying underlying substance use disorders is crucial. Tailoring harm reduction efforts to a patient's practices and providing flexible antimicrobial options can aid in successful treatment completion for PWIDs. Clinicians should be aware of the unique risks for comorbid infections among PWIDs and be prepared to offer comprehensive screening and treatment options.
Infectious complications of IDU represent some of the most common reasons for presentation to medical attention for PWIDs. Identification of an underlying substance use disorder is a critical first step in addressing both the acute infection, preventing future complications, and reducing mortality. Harm reduction efforts should be tailored to a patient's substance use practices to prevent future infectious complications. With an increasing array of antimicrobial treatment options available, clinicians should make every attempt to ensure that PWIDs are provided with flexible antimicrobial options to complete infectious diseases treatment and achieve clinical cure. Clinicians should be attuned to the unique risks for comorbid infections among PWIDs and prepared to offer comprehensive screening, as well as the initiation of substance use disorder treatment and linkage to outpatient treatment resources.
