Feasibility study to improve deep learning in OCT diagnosis of rare retinal diseases with few-shot classification

Tae Keun Yoo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the improvement of applying deep learning (DL) in diagnosing rare ophthalmic diseases through few-shot learning (FSL) using generative adversarial network (GAN). Synthetic images helped extract rare disease features and the DL model showed significant enhancement in OCT diagnosis, outperforming traditional models and reducing diagnosis delay.

Optical Coherence Tomography in Neuromyelitis Optica spectrum disorder and Multiple Sclerosis: A population-based study

Fereshteh Ashtari et al.

Summary: This study compared the characteristics of retinal nerve layers using SD-OCT in NMOSD, RRMS, and HCs in Iran. The results showed that both NMOSD and RRMS patients had similar retinal damage without a history of ON, but the severity of injury in NMOSD patients with a history of ON was significantly higher than in MS patients, which could be a distinguishing marker between the two. Furthermore, the absence of subclinical optic nerve involvement in NMOSD patients was confirmed.

Data augmentation for patch-based OCT chorio-retinal segmentation using generative adversarial networks

Jason Kugelman et al.

Summary: This study proposes using GANs to augment data for OCT chorio-retinal boundary segmentation, showing that models trained on synthetic data can perform comparably to those trained on real data. Data augmentation capabilities are demonstrated with improved classification performance realized on sparse datasets, highlighting the potential use of GANs in future work with chorio-retinal OCT images.

Generative adversarial networks in ophthalmology: what are these and how can they be used?

Zhaoran Wang et al.

Summary: Recent developments in artificial intelligence techniques have provided an innovative alternative for the development of deep learning systems, using generative adversarial networks (GANs) for image synthesis in ophthalmology. While GANs are widely used for generating 'new' medical images of various modalities, their relevance and evaluation in the field of ophthalmology remain unclear.

Livelayer: a semi-automatic software program for segmentation of layers and diabetic macular edema in optical coherence tomography images

Mansooreh Montazerin et al.

Summary: This study developed a semi-automatic software program for reliable segmentation of macular layers and outlining retinal pathologies, with shorter segmentation time and lower errors compared to manual segmentation. The software demonstrated good concordance with manual segmentation and interchangeability between the two methods.
