Mitigation of liquation cracking in selective laser melted Inconel 718 through optimization of layer thickness and laser energy density

Duy Nghia Luu et al.

Summary: Traditionally, the main goal of process optimization in selective laser melting is to achieve the highest relative density, but for Inconel 718, it has been found that the highest relative density does not necessarily correspond to the best mechanical properties; the presence of cracks in the microstructures can lead to significant differences in mechanical properties even with similar relative densities.

In-situ formation of TiC nanoparticles in selective laser melting of 316L with addition of micronsized TiC particles

Wengang Zhai et al.

Summary: In this study, strengthened 316L stainless steel was fabricated via selective laser melting by adding 3 wt% micronsized TiC particles, resulting in significantly improved yield strength. Nanosized TiC particles were observed to form in-situ during the process, leading to further strengthening effects.

On the heterogeneous cooling rates in laser-clad Al-50Si alloy

Ayan Bhowmik et al.

Summary: The study focused on the local microstructural heterogeneities in a single layer of laser clad hypereutectic Al-50Si alloy over Al7075 substrate using different applied laser powers. It was found that the different laser powers resulted in distinct differences in the microstructure orientation near the bead/substrate interface and the size and distribution of Si particles in the deposited layer. These microstructural differences were explained based on the melt pool solidification conditions of the hypereutectic alloy under different laser powers.

Columnar to equiaxed grain transition of laser deposited Ti6Al4V using nano-sized B4C particles

Xin Meng et al.

Summary: A new laser melting deposition (LMD) method was employed to stimulate the columnar to equiaxed transition (CET) in Ti6Al4V by adding 1-5 wt% nano-sized B4C particles. The addition of B4C resulted in refined grains and the production of TiB and TiC reinforcements, leading to increased strength and ductility in the material. The CET mechanism with successive layer-upon-layer deposition was also analyzed.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of TiN particles strengthened 316L steel prepared by laser melting deposition process

Ye Wang et al.

Summary: Addition of different contents of nanoscale TiN particles in the LMD process of 316L steel can significantly refine the grain sizes and improve the strength of the composites. Among them, an addition of 2 wt% TiN helps achieve balanced mechanical properties for the 316L-based composite materials.

Characterization of carbide particle-reinforced 316L stainless steel fabricated by selective laser melting

Ayan Bhowmik et al.

Summary: This study fabricated a TiC particle strengthened 316L stainless steel metal matrix composite using selective laser melting and characterized its microstructure with a focus on TiC carbides. Two families of TiC carbides were found in the SLM fabricated microstructure, formed along grain boundaries and in the grain interior. The contribution of nano-sized TiC precipitates to the strength of the composite was discussed, showing a significant increase in strength compared to pure 316L.
