Microstructure and Residual Stress Evolution of Laser Powder Bed Fused Inconel 718 under Heat Treatments

Giulio Marchese et al.

Summary: The study found that different heat treatments have varying effects on Inconel 718, with 800 degrees Celsius heat treatment maintaining the original microstructure and reducing residual stresses, while higher temperature treatments lead to the dissolution of the melt pool and dendritic structures, significantly reducing residual stresses.

The critical assessment for the fatigue limit of nanocrystallized surface with micro-notches obtained by ultrasonic surface rolling processing

Xingke Gao et al.

Summary: The fatigue limits of micro-notched specimens with nanocrystallized surface fabricated by USRP are significantly higher than that of coarse grain specimens due to surface hardening and compressive residual stress. Moreover, it is verified that the predicted value from Murakami's model agrees well with the experimental value when the surface Vickers hardness is selected.

Fatigue resistance and remaining life assessment of induction-hardened S38C steel railway axles

Yanan Hu et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed the residual stress field around induction-hardened S38C railway axles using a new unit pressure and proportional integral approach, predicted the fatigue life of the axles, and found that axles with compressive residual stresses have a longer remaining life. Additionally, a compressive stress field was observed around the crack front when the crack depth did not exceed 4.0 mm, which is the probable detection limit for maximum crack depth extension.

Understanding main factors controlling high cycle fatigue crack initiation and propagation of high strength maraging stainless steels with Ti addition

Jialong Tian et al.

Summary: The microstructure and high cycle fatigue property of maraging stainless steels with Ti addition were studied. The crack initiation mechanism in HCF depends on the value of normalized applied stress, where high NAS is controlled by yield strength dominated by nano-size precipitates and low NAS is controlled by the distance between TiN inclusion and specimen surface.

Auezhan Amanov

Summary: The study investigated the influence of UNSM temperature on the tribological properties of Ti-6Al-4V alloy, finding that COF was reduced and wear resistance enhanced due to increased strength and smoothed surface. Abrasive wear caused the most damage in the wear track of the sample, with wear mechanisms comprehensively investigated based on experimental data and microstructural images.

Yuhua Su et al.

Summary: Time-of-flight Bragg-edge neutron transmission imaging was used to investigate the microstructure and strain distributions in a gear treated with a newly developed two-step induction-heating method. The results showed differences in the microstructure and strain distributions between the surface and core regions of the gear under different treatment conditions.

Combining manufacturing of titanium alloy through direct energy deposition and laser shock peening processes

Jiaxuan Chi et al.

Summary: The combined manufacturing of direct energy deposition (DED) and laser shock peening (LSP) shows great potential in repairing titanium alloy components and improving their mechanical properties. This study evaluated the effects of LSP on microstructures, residual stress, and tensile properties of DEDed samples, finding that LSP induces a high-level compressive residual stress state and microstructure refinement, leading to an improvement in ultimate tensile strength.
