Microstructure of laser metal deposited duplex stainless steel: Influence of shielding gas and heat treatment

Maria Asuncion Valiente Bermejo et al.

Summary: This research evaluates the feasibility of producing industrial components using LMDw with duplex stainless steel wire, focusing on the influence of Ar and N-2 shielding gases on nitrogen loss and microstructure. The use of N-2 shielding prevents nitrogen loss and doubles the austenite content compared to Ar shielding. Heat treatment increases austenite content and microstructure homogeneity regardless of the shielding gas. The study shows that a stable and consistent LMDw process has been achieved for building more complex geometries closer to industrial full-size components.

Grain size dependence of twinning behaviors and resultant cryogenic impact toughness in high manganese austenitic steel

Jun Chen et al.

Summary: Two high manganese austenitic steels with different grain sizes were prepared to investigate size effect on twinning and cryogenic impact toughness. Increasing grain size from 11 to 47 μm enhanced Charpy impact absorbed energy by 36%, showing an inverse size effect on cryogenic impact toughness. The larger grain size resulted in better impact toughness at -196 degrees C due to stronger dynamic grain refinement, higher dislocation density, wider extended dislocations, and relatively homogeneous plastic deformation.

Summary: This review provided a comprehensive analysis of the microstructure, mechanical characteristics, and corrosion resistance of the long-term thermally aged DSS. It also highlighted how the microstructural evolutions affect the performance of the thermally aged DSS and discussed controversial issues such as the formation mechanism of G-phase. Additionally, a comprehensive review of the recovery behaviors of thermal aging embrittlement was provided, along with a summary of the limitations of present researches and future research directions.

The effect of annealing on the selective laser melting of 2205 duplex stainless steel: Microstructure, grain orientation, and manufacturing challenges

Greg N. Nigon et al.

Summary: 2205 duplex stainless steel components were manufactured using gas atomized powder via selective laser melting, with annealing restoring the duplex microstructure. The as-built and annealed ferrite grains exhibited [001] texture, while the measured microhardness was comparable to wrought alloys but the ultimate tensile strength and elongation were inferior. Cr segregation was observed in the as-built components, while Si/Mn segregation was observed in the annealed components.

Grain boundary character distribution in an additively manufactured austenitic stainless steel

Majid Laleh et al.

Summary: The study revealed that an austenitic stainless steel produced by additive manufacturing has relatively fine grains and a high population of Sigma 3 boundaries. The microstructure is mostly dominated by highly incoherent Sigma 3 boundaries, with other types of boundaries present in the grain boundary network. These findings demonstrate the potential to engineer the grain boundary network of materials via additive manufacturing.

Summary: The precipitation of intermetallic phases causes embrittlement in duplex stainless steels. Cooling cycles on UNS S31803 specimens showed that the volume fraction of σ and χ formed was lower than expected, possibly due to the initial DSS morphology.

On the pitting corrosion of 2205 duplex stainless steel produced by laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing in the as-built and post-processed conditions

Nima Haghdadi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of additive manufacturing and post-AM heat treatment on 2205 duplex stainless steel, revealing that post-AM heat treatment was effective in restoring the duplex microstructure and enhancing pitting resistance. The non-equilibrium microstructure dominated by delta-ferrite with Cr2N precipitation was observed in the AM specimens, which was fully recovered after post-AM heat treatment.

Effect of nitrogen on precipitation behavior of hyper duplex stainless steel S32707

Binbin Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the precipitation behavior of hyper duplex stainless steel S32707 is affected by N content. N can inhibit the formation of the a phase by altering the quantity of 8/? interfaces, the diffusion tendency of Cr and Mo, as well as the nucleation driving force and Cr activity of the a phase. Additionally, N also promotes the precipitation of Cr2N.

Ryan DeMott et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional characterization methods, such as 3D electron backscatter diffraction (3D-EBSD), have been utilized to investigate phase transformation and microstructural evolution in multi-phase materials like steel or titanium alloys. Advances in 3D-EBSD methods have enabled in-depth analyses of fine microstructures, revealing different types of 3D interconnectivity formed by various scanning strategies in titanium alloys. These findings offer new insights into the complex branching reported in different titanium microstructures during thermal cycling in electron powder bed fusion (E-PBF).
