Portevin-Le Chatelier effect, twinning-detwinning and disordering in an aged Ni-Cr-Mo alloy during large plastic deformation

Wanjun He et al.

Summary: Portevin-Le Chatelier (PLC) effects, twinning-detwinning, and disordering phenomena were observed and investigated in long-range ordered (LRO) phase strengthened Ni-Cr-Mo alloys during hot compression. The results showed that the PLC effects with type-C serrations occurred in the solution-treated and aged alloys, with the Pt2Mo-type LRO phase increasing the serration amplitude at the early stage of deformation. However, twinning of aged alloy was only activated after the early stage of deformation, and deformation twins and the Pt2Mo-type LRO phase were not stable during severe deformation. The potential disordering process of the LRO phase was suggested to be dislocation slipping on the two valid {111}<110> slip systems, and detwinning mechanism was likely the dislocation-twin boundary interaction as indicated by steps on the twin boundaries of remanent deformation twins.

Hydrogen-enhanced densified twinning (HEDT) in a twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of hydrogen was found to decrease twin thickness and increase twin density in TWIP austenitic steel, influencing its hydrogen embrittlement behavior. This phenomenon, termed hydrogen-enhanced densified twinning, plays an important role in the twinning process of TWIP austenitic steel.

The mechanism of dynamic strain aging for type A serrations in tensile curves of a medium-Mn steel

Jae-Hoon Nam et al.

Summary: The study aims to clarify the mechanism of dynamic strain aging (DSA) causing serrations in Fe-5.15Mn-0.15C-0.37Si-0.0039N medium-Mn steel specimens. Tensile tests revealed that the serrations were caused by DSA in γ_R and not related to other phases. The results suggest that DSA in the medium-Mn steel can be explained by the dislocation arrest model involving long-range pipe diffusion.

Investigating the compressive strength and strain localization of nanotwinned nickel alloys

Gianna M. Valentino et al.

Summary: Nickel-molybdenum-tungsten (Ni-Mo-W) thin films deposited by sputtering exhibit unique properties due to the fine growth twins formed during deposition. In this study, micropillar compression and microstructural analysis were used to investigate the compressive behavior and deformation mechanisms of nanotwinned Ni84Mo11W5 micropillars. The pillars show Hookean behavior up to compressive strengths of 3-3.5 GPa, with the onset of non-linear plastic flow indicated by discrete strain bursts and localized shear bands. Shear banding at high stresses leads to intense plastic deformation and the formation of twin-free nanocrystalline grains. The specialized plasticity in nanotwinned Ni-Mo-W is highlighted by the absence of detwinning and dislocation glide mechanisms.

Effects of temperature on mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of the equiatomic CrFeNi medium-entropy alloy

Mike Schneider et al.

Summary: Investigations on equiatomic CrFeNi medium-entropy alloy reveal stable face-centered cubic solid solution properties at specific temperatures. Cold-working and recrystallization processes can produce different grain sizes, showing varied mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms influenced by temperature. Analysis of deformation processes at different strains indicates a combination of dislocation glide and twinning mechanisms.

Investigation of work hardening behavior in multilayered steels architected by twinning induced plasticity steel and martensitic steel during uniaxial tension

Mao Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between deformation twins and work hardening behaviors of TWIP steels by designing a new multilayered steel structure to eliminate the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect. It was found that deformation twins contribute to the higher toughness near the interface in TWIP steel layers and are the main reason for the improvement of the strength-ductility synergy of TWIP steels and MLS.

Tensile strain induced texture evolution in a Ni-Mo alloy with extremely fine nanotwinned columnar grains

J. X. Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the plastic deformation in an electrodeposited nanotwinned columnar grained Ni-Mo film with extremely fine grain size. The significant detwinning and texture evolution observed during tensile straining can be attributed to interface energy minimization. The activity of threading dislocations contributes to high yield strength and noticeable deformability in the material.

Direct monitoring of twinning/detwinning in a TWIP steel under reversed cyclic loading

C. D'Hondt et al.

Summary: In situ tensile and reversed cyclic tests were conducted on a TWIP steel in a SEM, showing evidence of twinning/detwinning processes and their effects. It was observed that detwinning and retwinning occurred partially after load reversal, with stress variations close to twinning stress affecting the mechanical hysteresis of the material.
