The study successfully developed pH-sensitive zeolite Y nanoparticles for cisplatin delivery, with good cytocompatibility and sustained drug release properties.
The present study aims to develop the pH-sensitive zeolite Y nanoparticles for the delivery of cisplatin (CIS). The obtained results showed that CIS was incorporated in the zeolite cavities with a loading capacity of 19.3 +/- 0.6-32.4 +/- 0.3%, depending on the pH value of the environment, time, and drug concentrations. Furthermore, pH-dependency of CIS release from ZC-NPs was verified by the in vitro drug release assessment. Noticeably, in an acidic environment (pH = 5.4) a faster release of CIS could be observed (93.8 +/- 6.8% Vs 50.6 +/- 2.4% during 7 days of incubation). Based on the MTT results, the CIS released from ZC-NPs showed a cytotoxic effect. However, not only zeolite nanoparticles were non-cytotoxic, but also the viability of MG63 cells was improved compared to the zeolite-free samples. The advantages of ZC-NPs such as good cytocompatibility, excellent physiological stability, and sustained pH-responsive release properties make it a promising system for the delivery of other chemotherapeutic drugs.
