Synthesis and photophysical properties of vertically π-expanded coumarins

Chenyu Li et al.

Summary: New vertically pi-expanded coumarins dyes 1-phenynyl-2H-phenaleno[1,2,3-de] chromen-2-ones and 1-cyano-2H-phenaleno[1,2,3-de]chromen-2-ones were synthesized in high yields via Sonogashira reaction and cyanide substitution reaction, with excellent photophysical properties such as large Stokes shift and fluorescence quantum yield. The optical properties of these coumarins were discussed based on quantum chemical calculations, and their good biocompatibility was demonstrated through onion skin staining.

Tomoyuki Arai et al.

Summary: The TCP-based ICT dye 1 synthesized in this study showed environment-sensitive photophysical properties, with its absorption profile significantly dependent on the nature of the solvent. The dye exhibited a selective colorimetric response to anions in solution and had the potential to quantitatively detect fluoride ions in commercially available toothpaste.

Rational design of coumarin fluorophore with solvatochromism, AIE and mechanofluorochromic enhancement properties

Kaiming Zhang et al.

Summary: The newly designed and synthesized DPACP exhibits solvatochromism, aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and mechanofluorochromic (MFC) enhancements. It shows a bathochromic shift in emission wavelength and decreased quantum yield with increasing solvent polarity, as well as AIE behaviors in mixed solvent systems. The molecular structure, intermolecular interactions, and emission properties were investigated, revealing the crucial role of steric hindrance and absence of pi-pi stacking in AIE property, and the disturbance of weak electrostatic interaction in MFC enhancement.

Rational Design of an ICT-Based Chemodosimeter with Aggregation-Induced Emission for Colorimetric and Ratiometric Fluorescent Detection of Cyanide in a Wide pH Range

Sachin D. Padghan et al.

Summary: A chemodosimeter with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristic was designed for ultrasensitive and selective sensing of cyanide in a wide pH range of 3.0-12.0. The sensor enables colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescent detection of cyanide in a 90% aqueous solution, and can be conveniently used for cyanide sensing by the naked eye. Additionally, the chemodosimeter was successfully used for sensing cyanide in real environmental water samples.

Spectra of tryptophan fluorescence are the result of co-existence of certain most abundant stabilized excited state and certain most abundant destabilized excited state

Vladislav Victorovich Khrustalev et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the presence of three peak values in the fluorescence spectra of tryptophan, which vary depending on the polarity of the solvent. Smoothed spectra of Trp-containing proteins show a single fluorescence peak that can range between 330nm and 360nm, depending on different states within the protein.

White light employing luminescent engineered large (mega) Stokes shift molecules: a review

Nadia Nabihah Mohd Yusof Chan et al.

Summary: This review summarizes recent developments in white light generation using large Stokes shift molecules, discusses key approaches to designing such molecules, and provides insights into future opportunities and challenges. Various possible ways to design these molecules have been revealed by integrating photophysical mechanisms essential to produce red-shifted emission upon photoexcitation, such as excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), and excited state geometrical relaxation.
