Microplastic pollution in surface water and sediments in the urban section of the Vistula River (Poland)

Ilona Sekudewicz et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentration of microplastics in the urbanized section of the Vistula River was highest in the city center and near the wastewater treatment plant, with different levels of abundance in water and sediment samples. The dominant type of microplastics in both water and sediment samples was fibers, which were characterized as polystyrene, polypropylene, and other materials. Further research is needed to understand the transportation of microplastics in urban regions to the seas.

Microplastics in Surface Waters and Sediments from Guangdong Coastal Areas, South China

Yizheng Li et al.

Summary: Microplastics pollution levels in coastal areas of Guangdong Province are high, with transparent fibers being the main type. The study evaluated the pollution risk of microplastics along the coast of Guangdong using Raman analysis and pollution load index method, providing a basis for the formulation of environmental policy.

Microplastic fibers - Underestimated threat to aquatic organisms

Anja Rebelein et al.

Summary: Awareness of microplastic pollution in aquatic environments has increased significantly in the past decade, with particular attention being paid to the impact of microplastic fibers. Studies have shown that microplastic fibers have various negative effects on aquatic organisms, especially those at the base of the food chain.

Spatial and seasonal variability of beach litter along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea in 2015-2019-Recommendations for the environmental status assessment and measures

Tamara Zalewska et al.

Summary: The study found that the main source of beach litter on the southern Baltic coast is tourism and recreational activities, with artificial polymer materials being the dominant item. Despite no clear link between the number of tourists and litter amount, the coordinated efforts of beach clean-up companies play a crucial role in maintaining cleanliness. Overall, the environmental conditions along the southern Baltic coast in terms of beach litter were assessed as poor.

Microplastics distribution in the Eurasian Arctic is affected by Atlantic waters and Siberian rivers

Evgeniy Yakushev et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is recognized as a global threat to marine ecosystems, habitats, and wildlife, with remote locations such as the Arctic Ocean being impacted. This study analyzes microplastic distribution in the Eurasian Arctic through water samples, identifying two major sources of pollution: Atlantic surface water and discharge plumes of the Great Siberian Rivers.

From the coast to the shelf: Microplastics in Rias Baixas and Mino River shelf sediments (NW Spain)

Olga Carretero et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant microplastic pollution in sediments from Rias Baixas and Mino river shelf, primarily from polypropylene and high-density polyethylene. This indicates a concerning level of microplastic contamination in the marine environment.
