Dynamics of trace metals with different size species in the Pearl River Estuary, Southern China

Ziming Fang et al.

Summary: The Pearl River Estuary in Southern China, the largest estuary in the region, regulates the fluxes of riverine trace metals into the South China Sea. The study found that trace metals undergo transformations between different phases during estuarine mixing, with an increase in dissolved metal concentration accompanied by a decrease in particulate metal concentration.

Occurrence, source identification, and ecological risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in sediments of the Pearl River Delta, China

Haiyan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pollution characteristics, sources, and ecological risks of PAHs in surface sediments from the river networks and outlets of the Pearl River Delta. The results showed that PAHs in sediments were mainly derived from coke tar and liquid fossil fuel combustion, coal/wood combustion, and petroleum contamination. Ecological risks of PAHs were found to be at moderate levels in the Pearl River Delta, indicating the need for regular monitoring.

Spatial and seasonal patterns of dissolved organic matter hydrophobicity in Lake Taihu revealed by the aqueous two-phase system

He Cui et al.

Summary: The study revealed high-resolution spatial patterns and seasonal variations of DOM hydrophobicity in Lake Taihu, with riverine input, algae activity, and photodegradation identified as important processes shaping these patterns. The results highlighted the significant role of the riverine input, algae activity, and photodegradation process in influencing the hydrophobicity of DOM in different areas of the lake.
