Survival strategies on a semi-arid island: submersion and desiccation tolerances of fiddler crabs from the Galapagos Archipelago

Mariana V. Capparelli et al.

Summary: This study compared the physiological and biochemical adjustments of two fiddler crab species from the Galapagos archipelago to submersion and desiccation challenges, revealing species-specific survival and stress responses. The integrated biomarker response index based on oxidative stress indicated higher oxidative stress in Leptuca helleri, while submersion had a greater impact on Minuca galapagensis.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) adsorbed to polyethylene microplastics: Accumulation and ecotoxicological effects in the clam Scrobicularia plana

Naimul Islam et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastic ingestion and PFOS accumulation were dependent on microplastic size, but not on PFOS, with a reduction in filtration rate at the end of exposure. Reactive oxygen species were generated in gills and digestive gland as a result of exposure, confirming the disturbance of the antioxidant system.

Impacts of polyethylene microplastics on bioavailability and toxicity of metals in soil

Ming Li et al.

Summary: The study found that polyethylene microplastics increased the bioavailability of metals in soil and had toxic effects on earthworms. Metal concentrations in earthworms increased with the amount of microplastics in the soil, leading to changes in biomarkers and gene expression levels, causing toxicity to earthworms.

Microplastic accumulation via trophic transfer: Can a predatory crab counter the adverse effects of microplastics by body defence?

Ting Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that both water filtration and food consumption contribute to the accumulation of microplastics in the predatory marine crab. However, biomagnification of microplastics through consumption of contaminated mussels did not occur. The crabs upregulated detoxification and antioxidant defense mechanisms in response to the accumulation of microplastics, but these mechanisms collapsed when the concentration of microplastics exceeded a certain threshold.

Effects of polystyrene microplastic on uptake and toxicity of copper and cadmium in hydroponic wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L.)

Xueying Zong et al.

Summary: PS microplastics can adsorb heavy metals copper and cadmium, thereby reducing their toxic effects on wheat seedlings to some extent. Compared with single heavy metals treatments, the combination of PS microplastics and heavy metals helps increase chlorophyll content, enhance photosynthesis, and reduce ROS accumulation.

Sublethal effects of malathion insecticide on growth of the freshwater crab Poppiana dentata (Randall, 1840) (Decapoda: Trichodactylidae)

Delezia Shivani Singh et al.

Summary: The study found that juvenile crabs exposed to the malathion insecticide showed irregular growth patterns, delayed molting, and longer intermolt periods, which can affect maturity and have secondary consequences for local populations.
