Contamination and historical trends of legacy and emerging plasticizers in sediment from highly industrialized bays of Korea

Soy Kim et al.

Summary: This study in industrialized bays in Korea found widespread contamination of phthalates and NPPs in sediment samples, with major pollution sources including rivers, streams, and inner parts of bays, while proximity to industrial complexes and population growth were suggested as crucial factors.

Legacy and alternative plasticizers in surface sediment of black-odorous urban rivers across China: Occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological risk assessment

Yin-E Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological risk of legacy phthalates (LPs) and alternative plasticizers (APs) in surface sediment samples from 173 black-odorous urban rivers in 74 cities of China. The concentrations and compositions of LPs and APs varied among different sites and regions, with higher levels in southern and central China. Total organic carbon (TOC) was found to be a significant influencing factor for the distribution of LPs and APs in sediments. High ecological risks to aquatic organisms were observed for DiBP and DnBP, while DEHP, di-methyl phthalate, di-ethyl phthalate, and di-n-octyl phthalate showed low or moderate ecological risks for most sampling sites.

Phthalates and non-phthalate plasticizers in Tunisian marine samples: Occurrence, spatial distribution and seasonal variation

Amel Jebara et al.

Summary: The study in several sites along the Tunisian coast found that plasticizers were mainly distributed in water, sediment, seagrass, and fish, with seagrass showing the lowest contamination and sediment exhibiting stronger pollution. The distribution of plasticizers was influenced by proximity to anthropogenic sources.
