Ingestion of anthropogenic debris by marine fishes around New Zealand

Peter L. Horn

Summary: A summary is provided of anthropogenic debris found in stomachs of marine fishes from New Zealand waters up to 2020, with plastics being the main material discovered. The consumption of anthropogenic debris by fish in New Zealand waters appears to be widespread, especially among inshore demersal species and offshore pelagic species. Factors affecting the identification of plastics in fish diets include the analytical method used.

Summary: This study analyzed the ingestion of plastics by tubenosed seabirds, finding a close relationship between the types of polymer in plastics and the categories of plastics ingested by the birds, reflecting spatial and temporal variations in availability rather than ingestion preferences of the birds.

Microplastics in the edible tissues of shellfishes sold for human consumption

Damaris Benny Daniel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of microplastics in the edible tissues of four species of shellfishes, finding microplastic particles in each sample with significant species variation in contamination levels. The results suggest a potential annual dietary intake of microplastics by shellfish consumers, depending on species consumed and gut removal.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), trace elements and life history parameters of mass-stranded common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) in New Zealand

Summary: The study found that the PFAS concentrations in the livers of common dolphins were largely similar to those in other marine mammal species globally, mainly composed of long-chain compounds. There were significant positive correlations within respective PFAS and trace elements, while only negative correlations were evident between these two contaminant types. Additionally, age-associated concentrations were found for PFTrDA and four trace elements, indicating differences in bioaccumulation and biomagnification mechanisms.

Effect of microplastics in water and aquatic systems

Merlin N. Issac et al.

Summary: Plastics discarded into water resources break down into microplastics, which are easily ingested by aquatic organisms and can accumulate harmful pollutants, disrupting the biogenic flora and fauna and ecosystems. The distribution and impact of microplastics in the marine environment raise concerns for environmental and marine life.

Microfibers from synthetic textiles as a major source of microplastics in the environment: A review

Sanjit Acharya et al.

Summary: Microplastic fibers, primarily originating from synthetic textile garments during home laundering, are the most common form of microplastics in the environment. Studies indicate a significant release of microfibers during laundering, but the lack of standardized research protocols makes it challenging to establish definitive trends and comparisons among studies.

Laith A. Jawad et al.

Summary: A study of fish found in the food of Australasian gannets breeding in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand revealed seven small plastic particles in the stomach of one carangid specimen, identified through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy as various types of plastics. These plastic particles, categorized as micro- and mesoplastic fragments, ranged in shape and size from 4.5 to 10 mm.

Robson G. Santos et al.

Summary: Human activities are altering ecosystems globally, with plastic pollution playing a predominant role. Wildlife ingest plastic due to factors such as the availability of plastics in the environment, an individual's acceptance threshold, and the overlap of cues given by natural foods and plastics, as identified through the evolutionary trap theory.

The Dual Role of Microplastics in Marine Environment: Sink and Vectors of Pollutants

Michele Arienzo et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the issues of accumulation, transport, and effects of microplastics in the oceans, focusing on their dual role as accumulators of persistent organic compounds and their release-effect in the marine ecosystem. It also discusses the carrier role of emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products. The review presents two differing viewpoints, one emphasizing risks and the other downplaying them.
