When form does not predict function: Empirical evidence violates functional form hypotheses for marine macroalgae

Emily R. Ryznar et al.

Summary: This study validated the assumptions of the functional group model for marine macroalgae and found that differences in morphological complexity did not effectively generate distinct functional groups, with intergroup trait variation not exceeding intragroup variation. This indicates the need to consider individual species responses, and that functional groups are not suitable for predicting community responses to ecological drivers and species contributions to ecosystem function.

The Fucales Index: A new tool for monitoring subtidal rocky habitats, and its application to an Atlantic bay subjected to nuclear power plant's effluents

Ivan Monclaro Carneiro et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new index FI based on Fucales abundance to assess the impact of effluent and other disturbances on rocky shores hosting Fucales. The results show that FI can detect changes in Sargassum sp. abundance in different areas and increases with distance from the source of disturbance.

Macroalgae morpho-functional groups in Southern marine ecosystems: rocky intertidal in the Southwestern Atlantic (33°-35° S)

G. M. Velez-Rubio et al.

Summary: This study developed a simple classification method for macroalgal organisms in transitional waters in southern rocky shores, classifying species into eight MFGs based on morphological traits and showing that most species can be effectively classified using three morphological traits (shape, consistency, and texture). The validated MFGs differed significantly in species richness and biomass, were distributed differently along the intertidal zone, and dominated under different environmental conditions such as sea surface temperature, sea level, and salinity.
