Effects of Temperature and Light on Growth Rate and Photosynthetic Characteristics of Sargassum horneri

Wang Yong et al.

Summary: The study revealed that S. horneri showed the highest relative growth rate, maximal electron transport rate, and net photosynthetic rate at 20 degrees Celsius and 120 μmol photons m(-2) s(-1) light intensity. Conversely, growth was significantly inhibited at 30 degrees Celsius and the lowest light intensity of 30 μmol photons m(-2) s(-1). Additionally, high light intensity increased non-photochemical quenching even under the highest temperature, suggesting that higher light intensity could induce a photo-protection reaction in the thalli.

Golden seaweed tides accumulated in Pyropia aquaculture areas are becoming a normal phenomenon in the Yellow Sea of China

Jinlin Liu et al.

Summary: In January 2020, a golden seaweed tide occurred in the Yellow Sea of China, causing significant economic losses to local seaweed farmers. The floating Sargassum thalli drifted around Pyropia aquaculture areas until May 2020, eventually posing an ecological threat to coastal areas in Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. The local government is developing an emergency plan to prevent future golden tides and it is crucial to understand the mechanisms behind Sargassum blooms.
