The intriguing chemistry and biology of sulfur-containing natural products from marine microorganisms (1987-2020)

Yang Hai et al.

Summary: Natural products derived from marine microorganisms containing sulfur have shown diverse biological activities and are considered a potential resource for drug discovery. A total of 484 sulfur-containing natural products were isolated from marine microorganisms, with the majority being thioethers, thiazole/thiazoline compounds, and sulfoxides, sulfones, and thioesters. Among them, 133 compounds were further discussed on their structure-activity relationships, mechanisms of action, biosynthesis, and druggability in this systematic review conducted from January 1987 to December 2020.
