Effects of postglacial seawater intrusion on sediment geochemical characteristics in the Romanian sector of the Black Sea

Livio Ruffine et al.

Summary: The research investigated pore water and sediment geochemistry in the western Black Sea through long Calypso piston core samples, revealing that organic matter degradation mainly occurs in the upper 15 meters of the sediment column. Sulfate reduction coupled with Anaerobic Methane Oxidation is the dominant electron-accepting process, and there is a close link between Fe2+ and Mn2+ maxima and Ca2+ peaks.
