On the origin of bleaching phenomena in red bed sediments of Triassic Buntsandstein deposits in Central Germany

Michaela Aehnelt et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the geochemical composition of sandstones in the Lower Triassic Buntsandstein in Central Germany, combined with mineralogical data, to investigate the origin of various bleaching phenomena in primary red beds. The results indicate that the bleaching phenomena are diverse and linked to stages of diagenesis and different episodes of fluid flow.

Experimental fracture sealing in reservoir sandstones and its relation to rock texture

Benjamin Busch et al.

Summary: Faults and fractures are crucial fluid pathways in subsurface energy reservoirs, impacting reservoir quality and production potential. Mineral precipitations can decrease available fractures, affecting porosity and permeability. Research on hydrothermal experiments in sandstone reveals that grain size variations and lamination can influence the growth of quartz cement in fractures. The mineralogy of the precipitate is influenced by detrital compositions, with quartz abundance impacting the type of precipitate formed.

Compaction control on diagenesis and reservoir quality development in red bed sandstones: a case study of Permian Rotliegend sandstones

Alexander C. Monsees et al.

Summary: This study examines the diagenetic impact on reservoir quality and permeability heterogeneity of sandstones in different areas, finding that different authigenic phases and processes lead to significant variation in reservoir quality. The composition and distribution of authigenic minerals and coatings play a crucial role in determining the porosity and permeability of the sandstones. The results highlight the importance of distinguishing between different types of grain coatings and their effects on chemical compaction and quartz cementation, providing insights for reservoir quality assessment in hydrocarbon and geothermal plays.

Evolution of diagenetic conditions and burial history in Buntsandstein Gp. fractured sandstones (Upper Rhine Graben) from in-situ δ18O of quartz and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology of K-feldspar overgrowths

Claire Bossennec et al.

Summary: In-situ delta O-18 measurements in quartz overgrowths within the Buntsandstein Gp. sandstone reservoirs in the Upper Rhine Graben reveal two types of evolution linked to burial temperature increase and injection of allochthonous fluids. The fluids causing quartz cementation are either autochthonous buffered in O-18 from clay illitisation or allochthonous fluids of meteoric origin with delta O-18 below -5%. These results provide insights into the diagenetic history of the region and the initiation of quartz cementation during the Jurassic period, validated by dating results obtained on feldspar overgrowths.
