Diagenesis of the Vaca Muerta Formation, Neuquen Basin: Evidence from petrography, microthermometry and geochemistry

Maria del Rosario Lanz et al.

Summary: The Tithonian Vaca Muerta Formation in the Pampa de Tril area is a potential unconventional hydrocarbon reservoir in western Argentina, with petrographic examinations revealing four generations of calcite. The diagenetic history of the formation indicates deposition in tropical warm shallow-water settings, with different calcite generations showing varying characteristics related to hydrocarbon fluid inclusions and deep burial conditions.

Mineralogy and geochemistry of deeply-buried marine sediments of the Vaca Muerta-Quintuco system in the Neuquen Basin (Chacay Melehue section), Argentina: Paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental implications for the global Tithonian-Valanginian reconstructions

Ignacio A. Capelli et al.

Summary: The study of the Vaca Muerta-Quintuco (VM-Q) system in the Neuquen Basin of western Argentina analyzed sedimentology, mineralogy, and geochemistry to determine the factors leading to a paleoenvironmental change from a carbonate ramp to a mixed siliciclastic/carbonatic marine environment. The results indicated that changes in organic carbon isotope composition, clay mineralogy, trace elements, and stable isotopes can serve as valuable proxies for past ocean-climate variability, even after burial diagenesis.
