Electrostatically Cross-Linked Reversible Gels-Effects of pH and Ionic Strength

Roman Stano et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conditions for the formation of electrostatically cross-linked coacervate gels using oppositely charged macromolecules. It discovered three states of the system at different pH levels and demonstrated that the charge state in the gel phase can be accurately described by the ideal Henderson-Hasselbalch equation.

Modeling of weak polyelectrolyte hydrogels under compression - Implications for water desalination

Oleg V. Rud et al.

Summary: Hydrogels immersed in salty solutions affect the ion partitioning and decrease the pH, which in turn diminishes the ionization degree of weak polyelectrolyte gels. This makes them less efficient in desalinating water with low salinity.

Monte Carlo simulations of weak polyampholyte microgels: pH-dependence of conformation and ionization

C. Hofzumahaus et al.

Summary: The study found that the pH-dependent swelling transition of microgels becomes broader as the electrostatic interaction between ionized groups with opposite charges strengthens. Additionally, the intramolecular charge compensation of acidic and basic groups in the microgels results in their counterions leaving the microgel, further amplifying the broadening of the pH-dependent swelling transition.

Can oppositely charged polyelectrolyte stars form a gel? A simulational study

Andrea Tagliabue et al.

Summary: This study investigates the equilibrium structures and properties of charged polymer stars, revealing the formation of a network phase under specific conditions. Results show that ionic bonds exhibit short lifetimes and a high frequency of association/dissociation events.
