Initial subduction-related magmatism in southern Alaska identified by geochemistry and zircon Hf-O isotopes

Jin-Hui Yang et al.

Summary: A comprehensive geochemical-geochronological study of Late Triassic to mid-Jurassic plutonic rocks from southern Alaska reveals unique geochemical features in Late Triassic trondhjemites, suggesting shallow partial melting of subducting high-temperature hydrothermally altered lower oceanic crust as a plausible explanation. These surprising findings may open up new ways to study subduction initiation and have important implications for future research on plate tectonics and continental crust formation.
