Reproducing the virus-to-copepod link in Arctic mesocosms using host fitness optimization

Summary: Viruses have a significant impact on biogeochemical functions of pelagic microbial food webs by shifting material away from predatory pathways. Inclusion of viruses as a single plankton functional type in dynamic food web models can be challenging due to competition with predators for limited resources. Adaptation in the defensive and competitive traits of the host community can address this issue, leading to a quantitative theory for regulating viral dynamics and emphasizing the role of predator top-down control in pelagic microbial food webs.

Differences in physiology explain succession of mixoplankton functional types and affect carbon fluxes in temperate seas

Suzana Gonsalves Leles et al.

Summary: Different hypotheses have been proposed to explain plankton community assembly and the impact of changes in biodiversity on ecosystem function. In this study, a modeling approach was used to evaluate the seasonalities of mixoplankton functional types (MFTs) and how functional differences affect their roles in carbon fluxes. The simulations show that mixoplankton of different sizes exhibit seasonal population dynamics throughout the water column, and the partitioning of production among different size-classes depends on how mixoplankton functional diversity is described in the model.

Modelling the Effects of Traits and Abiotic Factors on Viral Lysis in Phytoplankton

Kevin J. Flynn et al.

Summary: The model describes the interactions between a single lytic virus and phytoplankton host, exploring factors such as abiotic factors, host traits, and virus traits. Smaller viruses and smaller motile hosts lead to more productive infection outcomes, but the timing of the interaction development is critical for successful infection. The inoculum level of the virus and suspended particle load also play significant roles in the infection outcomes.
