Morphological Variation of an LB Film of Giant Amphiphiles Composed of Poly(ethylene oxide) and Hydrophobically Modified POSS

Xian Xu et al.

Summary: Hydrophobically modified polyhedral oligomeric silsesquiox-anes (XPOSS) are linked to water-soluble poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) to synthesize giant amphiphiles (XPOSS-PEO), which exhibit interesting surface activation capacity. The LB film deposition protocol is used to transfer monolayers of XPOSS-PEO onto silicon substrates at different surface pressures, significantly affecting the LB film morphologies. LB films assembled with POSS modified with fluorinated agents exhibit a fractal growth pattern, while LB films with POSS decorated with pure alkane chains do not show this pattern.

Unexpected Order-Disorder Transition in Diacetylene Alcohol Langmuir Films

Tomas Rego et al.

Summary: The phase diagram of a Langmuir film was studied, revealing an unexpected reversible transition from an ordered condensed phase to a disordered one, possibly due to the competition between interactions within the hydrophobic chain and hydrogen bonds between head groups and water.

Phase Behaviors of Giant Surfactants with Different Numbers of Fluorinated Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane Heads and One Poly(ethylene oxide) Tail at the Air-Water Interface

Xian Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phase behaviors of giant surfactants with different numbers of aryltrifluorovinyl ether-functionalized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (FVPOSS) heads at the air-water interface. The interfacial behaviors greatly change with an increase in the number of FVPOSS heads, showing more phase transitions and morphological evolution. Molecular mechanisms are proposed to explain the phase transitions at the interface.

Pattern Formation in Phase-Separated Langmuir and Langmuir Monolayer Films

Ci Yan et al.

Summary: This review discusses the phase separation of mixed monolayer films comprising hydrogenated and fluorinated surfactants, forming interfaces with diverse structures at micrometer and nanometer scales. The relationship between surfactant molecular structure and overall patterns in the monolayers is explored, focusing on two main classes of mixed perfluorocarbon-hydrocarbon surfactant systems. The review also outlines key scientific questions and relationships in need of further elucidation, as well as directions for future research in this area.

Photo-responsive Behaviors of Hydrogen-Bonded Polymer Complex Fibers Containing Azobenzene Functional Groups

Miaomiao Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, azobenzene compounds DR1 and Aazo were linked to PAA side chains to form PAA-DR1 and PAA-Aazo, which were then associated with PEO to produce hydrogen-bonded polymer complex fibers. UV irradiation led to significant improvements in mechanical properties for PAA-Aazo/PEO fibers, while only slight changes were observed for PAA-DR1/PEO fibers. Additionally, both types of fibers showed contraction under UV irradiation, indicating potential for photo-actuation.
