Performance of molecular crystals in conversion of light to mechanical work

Jad Mahmoud Halabi et al.

Summary: Dynamic molecular crystals have shown promising potential as energy-transducing materials for actuators, with the ability to substitute micromotor drivers in mechanical positioning and microgripping tasks. Finite element modeling and performance evaluation are essential tools in predicting and optimizing the mechanical response of these materials for soft microrobotics applications.

Effect of Surface Properties on the Photo-Induced Crawling Motion of Azobenzene Crystals on Glass Surfaces

Yasuo Norikane et al.

Summary: The study found that crystals exhibit crawling motion on glass substrates with different surface properties when exposed to UV and visible light. On hydrophilic surfaces, crystals crawled faster but showed spreading, while on hydrophobic surfaces, they displayed little shape change and slower crawling motion. The interaction of melted azobenzene with glass surfaces was identified as playing a crucial role in the crawling motion, with proposed models explaining the asymmetrical conditions leading to directional motion.
