The role of discontinuities in the susceptibility, development, and runout of rock avalanches: a review

Hengxing Lan et al.

Summary: This paper systematically reviews and discusses the effects of discontinuities on the three phases of rock avalanches. Discontinuities not only influence the detachment of rock masses and their disintegration during runout, but also control the rock mass strength and susceptibility. During the development phase, discontinuities increase slope fragmentation and decrease resistance to failure. During runout, discontinuities primarily control rock avalanches through shear and progressive fragmentation.

A landslide ternary diagram for geometric form and topographic site in Taiwan

Samkele Tfwala et al.

Summary: The study found a significant increase in natural disasters induced by rainfall events in Taiwan, with different types of landslides showing variations in geometric form, geographic distribution, and scale characteristics. Shallow landslides and large landslides displayed a significant linear trend in length and volume, while large landslides showed an increasing trend in volume with depth. The power law scaling components were utilized for classification, with the best model being beta(1) for categorizing different types of landslides.

Distribution and characteristics of large landslides in a fault zone: A case study of the NE Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Tianjun Qi et al.

Summary: The study reveals a close relationship between the fault zone and large landslides in the Bailong River Basin on the northeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Almost all landslides with an area greater than 1 square kilometer are distributed on faults, with the strike of the faults constraining the direction of landslide movement. Additionally, the asymmetrical arc-shaped cross sections of the landslides reflect significant geomorphic differences between the north and south sides of the landslides.

Spatial patterns, controlling factors, and characteristics of landslides triggered by strike-slip faulting earthquakes: case study of Lefkada island, Greece

George Papathanassiou et al.

Summary: This research focuses on the island of Lefkada, Greece, analyzing landslide data from two shallow strike-slip faulting earthquakes in 2003 and 2015. The study finds that landslide patterns are not controlled by a single parameter, but result from a combination and interaction of seismic, morphological, and geological factors. Specifically, parameters such as slope angle, geology, and fault rupture/asperities are closely related to the highest landslide densities.

Role of landslides on the volume balance of the Nepal 2015 earthquake sequence

A. Valagussa et al.

Summary: The 7.8 M-w earthquake in Nepal in 2015 triggered a large number of landslides, partially compensating for the tectonic uplift. The study found that the contribution of landslides to erosion was relatively small compared to vertical coseismic displacement, with tectonic displacement strongly dominating the volume balance of the earthquake.
